Japanese Tree Shapes is a small family-run company based in East Devon. We specialise in Niwaki (Japanese Cloud Pruning). We work in residential gardens and homes, offering tree maintenance services including conventional and Niwaki tree pruning and planting, fruit tree pruning, hedge cutting and shaping, and stump grinding. Alongside this, we grow a range of beautifully cultivated trees and shrubs in the Japanese style which are available to order.
About Us
Originally part of Rowse Tree Services, Japanese Tree Shapes was established as a separate sister company with specialised Niwaki growing, pruning and planting services in 2023. The company is headed up by Andy Rowse (OND Arb, Tech Cert Arbor A, FDsc Arboriculture). Japanese Tree Shapes began life in 2010 when Andy’s interest in cloud pruning and topiary started. Since then, Andy has developed both his practical skills and theoretical knowledge of Niwaki over the last fourteen years. He has completed training courses with UK-based Niwaki expert Jake Hobson and worked in-situ with the Mokuyousha tree care team in Chino, Japan. Andy has developed a great interest for Japanese gardening philosophy and aesthetic and has become a great advocate for Niwaki, incorporating it into his work with trees and shrubs in the South West of England. Andy’s focus is on using Niwaki in English gardens, creating a fusion landscape. We are members of the Arboricultural Association and the Japanese Garden Society. We are NPTC qualified and fully insured including public liability insurance.

We work across East Devon, including: Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Otterton, Exmouth, Exeter, Honiton, Ottery St Mary, West Hill, Colyton, Axminster, Seaton.
